Filmverb: A Cinematic Shimmer Reverb for REAPER (JSFX)

If you spend a lot of time working on cinematic audio, ambient tracks, or sound design, you know how often you reach for a thick, modulated reverb. I wanted to create a straightforward tool for this exact scenario right inside REAPER. The result is Overstratum Filmverb, a new JSFX plugin focused on wide spaces and pitch-shifted tails.

How it sounds

The main idea behind Filmverb is to generate long, evolving textures. You have control over the standard parameters like length, high/low cuts, and density, but the core feature is the shimmer section.

You can dial in the pitch shift interval and feed it back into the reverb loop. There is also a Dual Mode, which routes the pitch shifter in two directions to create a more complex, chorused tail. I added a dedicated modulation section (Speed and Detune) to keep the decay moving and prevent it from sounding static.

Standing on the shoulders of giants

I didn’t build the DSP math from scratch. The engine is a hybrid built on top of some incredibly smart open-source work by other developers. The pitch-shifting, FFT processing, and base reverberation algorithms are powered by Saike’s code.

For the deep, space-like diffusion and the shimmer loop logic, I adapted concepts from Airwindows (specifically the Galactic algorithms). Combining these two approaches gave Filmverb the exact texture I was looking for.

It runs completely offline, requires no registration, and works flawlessly on Linux, Windows, and macOS setups. Just drop it into your REAPER effects folder and start playing.
