Stutter v1.2.0 is a zero-latency JSFX plugin designed natively for REAPER. Engineered without relying on Plugin Delay Compensation (PDC), version 1.2.0 introduces powerful new safety mechanisms for flawless live glitching.

“Safe Random” Engine
Generative randomizers often roll modifiers that attempt to read unrecorded future audio, forcing the audio engine into dropouts. Version 1.2.0 introduces a dedicated “SAFE” toggle directly next to the shuffle settings. When activated, the algorithm applies strict mathematical filtering to the chaotic generation:
- No Future-Reads: The randomizer strictly generates slice targets that belong to the securely recorded past.
- Reverse Protection: The reverse (REV) modifier is mathematically prevented from landing on the currently live-recording step. If triggered, the logic automatically shifts the read point backward or defaults to a normal playback state.
Changelog: v1.2.0
This major update completely overhauls the core DSP architecture, making it one of the most robust real-time slicing tools available.
- Dynamic RAM Allocation: The hardcoded 24-million sample buffer from the previous version has been replaced with a dynamic calculation capping the memory at 120 seconds based on your project’s sample rate.
- Empty Source Detection: The plugin actively measures peak envelopes per step and toggles a distinct “EMPTY SRC FALLBACK” UI indicator if a slice contains absolute silence.
- Safe Random Mode: A new switchable parameter prevents the motif randomizer from generating impossible slices, completely avoiding Smart Fallback triggers.
- Equal-Gain Crossfading: The asymmetric attack and tail crossfade logic was completely rewritten into a symmetric equal-gain fade that only triggers upon discrete read-head jumps.
- Safety Limiter: A switchable
tanh()soft clipper algorithm has been added to transparently tame output volume spikes during heavy manipulation. - MIDI Momentary Stacking: The momentary MIDI mode now utilizes a bitmask to track multiple held keys, cleanly reverting to the last held note (or the base pattern) upon release.
- Seek & Tempo Protection: New logic actively monitors the play state and absolute beat position to safely reset buffers during sudden timeline jumps or tempo automation.
- Future-Read Reverse Fix: Reverse modifiers now dynamically shift their target read beats backward in chunk increments to avoid reading negative delays.
- Buffer-Aware UI: Extreme step divisions (like 32/1) that exceed the dynamic 120-second buffer limit are now dynamically greyed out in the user interface.
